Nate Dogg Pleads Not Guilty to Felony Stalking Charges

CARSON -- Hip-hop artist Nate Dogg pleaded not guilty today to
felony charges he threatened and stalked his estranged wife.The 38-year-old singer, whose real name is Nathaniel Dwayne Hale, is charged with two criminal threats charges and one stalking count -- all felonies -- along with a misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended license stemming from a prior DUI conviction. The criminal threat charges stem from e-mails Hale allegedly sent his estranged spouse, while the stalking charge involves chasing the woman's car on the San Diego (405) Freeway in the Carson area last month, according to Jane Robison of the District Attorney's Office. Hale was arrested about 8:30 a.m. June 23 on the northbound 405 at Avalon Boulevard. According to a CHP statement, "a female caller contacted the CHP Los Angeles communications center via 911 to report that her estranged husband, Nate Hale, had made death threats against her, and was now following her vehicle as she traveled north on I-405." "South Los Angeles CHP officers quickly moved to intercept the two parties, and stopped the victim and Mr. Hale," the CHP reported. He was released the next morning on bond. Compton Superior Court Commissioner Joel Wallenstein ordered Hale's bail to be increased from $50,000 to $100,000, and Hale was briefly held until a bail bondsman arrived in court to post the increased amount. The commissioner ordered Hale "not to have any contact with the complaining witness," and told him to stay 100 yards away from her until the criminal proceedings are resolved. Hale, who appeared in court in a wheelchair as a result of a stroke he suffered, is due back in court on Aug. 1. A date is scheduled to be set then to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial. Officers arrested Hale and booked him into a facility that has medical supervision, the CHP reported.
