A group of sixth-grade students from Topanga Elementary School departed for a long road trip to Sacramento this morning to hand-deliver a petition to the governor's office, asking to keep Topanga State Park from closing.

Governor Arnold schwarzenegger has proposed closing 48 state parks to help make up for a $141 billion deficit. Topanga state park is on that list.

The students gathered more than15,000 signatures and also recorded more than 30 original songs for a CD which they sold to fund the trip.

The kids started their journey around 5 a.m. today and hoped to deliver the signatures by 12:30 p.m. before heading home.
