Opening Statements Begin In Wiretapping Trial

LOS ANGELES -- Opening statements are under way in the
wiretapping trial of a lawyer and a Hollywood private detective
accused of listening to private conversations of a billionaire's
ex-wife.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Lally says the case that began
Thursday will rest on recorded discussions between attorney Terry
Christensen and private investigator Anthony Pellicano rather than
any of the conversations they are accused of wiretapping.
Lally says prosecutors don't have recordings of the alleged
wiretaps.
Attorney Patty Glaser, who represents Christensen, says the
recorded conversations were altered by Pellicano.
Federal prosecutors say Christensen paid Pellicano $100,000 to
wiretap phones of Lisa Bonder Kerkorian, the ex-wife of MGM mogul
Kirk Kerkorian, in 2002 during a child custody dispute.
