Copper Thieves Leave Little Leaguers in the Dark Ventura, Calif. -- Little League players in Ventura County are crying foul after copper thieves left them in the dark. Thieves targeted copper wires in an electrical vault at Camino Real Park last week, causing damage estimated at $20,000.

Police say the theft occurred late May 1st or early May 2nd, and repairs will take weeks to complete. "There's a ton of damage we have to fix," Public Works Director Ron Calkins said.

The league was left scrambling to reschedule games and move them to other parks.

The league cancelled all night games until the lighting is restored, and start times have been moved up an hour to 5 p.m. so they can be completed by sunset.

The resulting shortage of baseball fields has forced relocation of some games to as far away as Santa Paula. "it's just made life a lot more difficult than it was, " Little League President Mike Mislinay said.

Copper can fetch more than $3 a pound at recycling centers and theft have been increasing, authorities said. Caltrans officials have reported copper wiring from traffic lights at freeway underpasses and from rest areas in recent weeks.
