Police Find 9 Pounds of Heroin in Backpack Anaheim -- Police arrested a Long Beach man after a drug-sniffing dog found 9 pounds of tar heroin in a backpack in his car.

Baudelio Hernandez Ruiz, 37, was pulled over at 8 p.m. Wednesday by a K-9 patrol officer near the corner of Euclid and La Palma avenues. The stop was in response to a variety of traffic violations, police say.

The K-9 officer brought his dog with him as he approached the car, a silver 2006 Nissan Sentra. The dog detected the odor of the heroin, which reports say police found stowed in a backpack in the trunk of the car.

Police Spokesman Rick Martinez said it was uncommon to seize so much heroin, which police estimate to have a street value of $80,000. Police are still interrogating the suspect to try to find out who supplied the drugs.

Police reports say prosecutors are pursuing charges of possession and transportation and possession for sale of heroin.

Ruiz' bail is set at $1 million.
