Worker Struck and Killed by Amtrak Train
May 7, 2008, 5:38 PM PDTThe man was struck by a southbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train bound for San Diego around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Valley View Avenue and Stage Road. Vernae Graham, spokeswoman for Amtrak, said it appeared that the man was a contractor with A-Ceco, a company hired to do repair work on one of the tracks. None of the 140 passengers and crew aboard the Amtrak train, which left at 6:45 a.m. from San Luis Obispo and was en route to San Diego, was injured, she said. Jason Zuhlke of the Whittier Police Department said the 24-year-old Hesperia man was trying to move a piece of equipment out of the way when he was struck by the train. "We have three sets of tracks that run parallel to each other," Zuhlke said. "They were working on the northernmost track and doing some asphalt repair. Unfortunately, our victim in this case was operating a piece of machinery that's used to compact newly laid asphalt. As the train approached, he felt that that piece of equipment was a little too close to the center track where our train was traveling southbound. As he tried to move that piece of equipment out of the way, he was struck at first, you know, in the back and unfortunately he was drug about 30 feet. Unfortunately he died at the scene." Train traffic was brought to a halt in the area until about 5 p.m. while the investigation continued. The Amtrak train was stopped on the tracks just south of the intersection. Graham said one northbound Amtrak train out of San Diego was canceled, and those passengers had to be placed on another train. The Metrolink Orange County and 91 Line trains, which share the same tracks, were also delayed. Copyright © 2008, KTLA
