One-Hour Facelift While Awake
May 5, 2008 Now, one local plastic surgeon has developed a technique that takes the danger out of a facelift because his patients are wide awake, yet feel nothing. It's called the "Simoni Lift." The invention of Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Payman Simoni, it came about as a way to offer patients a safer alternative. Dr. Simoni says operating with only local anesthia has other benefits, too. "Since i took the anesthesia away, the patient is sitting up. I can talk to them during surgery. I can see the movement of their face, and I move it in an angle that is more natural." The Simoni Lift is particularly good for patients with health concerns that won't allow them to be put under general anesthesia. It's also an alternative for smokers who are routinely turned away for elective surgeries such as facelift because general anesthesia presents a greater risk for smokers. Dr. Simoni says general anesthesia causes blood vessels to expand and bleed because everything is relaxed. In turn, patients bruise and swell. With numbing, he says, that's not such an issue because there is almost no bleeding. The downtime for patients is minimal with most returning to work within five to seven days. Patients tend not to need much pain medication, and when the sutures are removed a week later, they are already back at work and the scars are easily covered with makeup. In addition to the safety of avoiding general anesthesia and the more natural outcome, there is a big savings financially. The cost of the Simoni Lift is about $7,000.00; several thousand less than if an anesthesiologist was needed. Patients also aren't paying for a recovery room nurse and they can go home immediately after surgery because they have been given a lot of medication. don't have to pay for an anesthesiologist or after-care while they recover from the medications, bringing the cost down by several thousand dollars.
