Port of Los Angeles

FLOAT THEME:

The Place Where the World Comes Together

As the busiest container port in the U.S. and the West Coast’s number one port for cruise traffic, the Port of Los Angeles is truly “The Place Where the World Comes Together.” The Port of Los Angeles is a major international trade gateway, facilitating the flow of nearly $230 billion in imported and exported products and materials across the U.S. From the Port of Los Angeles, cruise travel to Mexico, Hawaii and points beyond add to the array of tourism opportunities that attract worldwide travelers to Los Angeles each year.

The Port of Los Angeles is an international hub for commerce and travel, providing a “passport” to a celebration of tourism and economic trade.

A “float-illa” is coming to Pasadena for the Rose Parade, thanks to the Port of Los Angeles, representing the City of Los Angeles. Six vessels will float along Colorado Boulevard as part of the world’s New Year’s Day celebration, colorfully illustrating “The Place Where the World Comes Together.” A gigantic cargo ship and sleek cruise ship celebrate the Port’s position as the busiest container port in the U.S. and the #1 cruise port on the West Coast. Both the container ship and the cruise ship have giant electric outlets on their bows, symbols of the Port’s leadership in clean air initiatives. (L.A. is the only port in the world where cargo ships -- and soon cruise ships, too -- plug into clean, electric power while at dock.) Escorting the main ships are a tug boat, Los Angeles Port Police boat, Los Angeles Fire Department boat and a fishing boat. The fireboat will be spraying water from its hoses – could it be to keep blossoms on the floats fresh? In reality, the Warner Lawrence fireboat at the Port is the world’s largest and most powerful fireboat.

FLOWERING:

The SS Los Angeles cargo ship features a hull of coconut and ground rice, ground parsley, ti leaves, fine cut strawflower, onion seed and lettuce seed; the bridge is coconut and ground rice, and the smokestack is black seaweed; the cargo boxes are statices, strawflower, and parsley flakes. The cruise ship is coconut and ground rice with life boats of everlasting, red and white strawflower. The fireboat is created with red chrysanthemums, silverleaf, and has hoses of fine cut strawflower. The fishing boat offers coconut, everlasting and ground rice with seaweed, with accents of strawflower, carnation petals, and a “fish ball” made up of lentil seed, lentil, blue statice and parsley flakes. The police boat is arresting in blue statice, coconut and ground rice. The tug is made up of chrysanthemums, statice and strawflower, with a smoke stack of seaweed and poppy seed. The water surrounding the vessels is iris, statice, orchids and rice powdered coco sticks. Floral accents include daisies, roses, iris, carnations and orchids.
