Happy Chinese New Year
The Chinese New Year is joyously celebrated throughout Asia and in many cities with large Asian populations around the world -- especially in the United States, and specifically in the City of Alhambra.
This highly stylized float transports parade viewers to participation in one of the world’s traditional New Year’s celebrations -- much as is the case with the Tournament of Roses. |

“Happy Chinese New Year” is the greeting from the City of Alhambra, which offers a colorful pagoda which is adorned with festive lanterns and ornaments and decorated in the holiday’s traditional red and gold hues. Feb. 7, 2008 will begin the 15-day celebration of the Chinese New Year which is symbolized as the Year of the Rat. Fireworks further accent the float, and the American Chinese Culture Association entertains parade viewers by performing a dragon dance alongside the float. |

The rat at the front of the float, symbolizing the upcoming Chinese New Year, is covered with erianthus plumes, its garland is created with spring rye, gypsophila, and gerbera daisies. The roof tiles on the pagoda are made up of red strawflower, orange lentil, and flax seed. The lanterns feature tops and bottoms of red carnation petals, bodies of crushed rice with designs created with flax seed, parsley flakes, carnation petals and whole white rice and raffia streamer accents. The urns are covered with parsley flakes and white rice, and are filled with bouquets of lunaria, green eucalyptus, heather, gladiolus larkspur, dendrobium orchids and cocosticks. The base of the float is features gypsophila lavender roses, light and dark carnations, gerbera daisies, white roses and carnations and dark purple roses and carnations.
