Cerritos Airplane Tragedy
At 11:53 a.m., August 31, 1986 an Aeromexico DC-9 collided in mid-air with a single engine Piper Archer. The resulting damage to the DC-9 caused it to lose flight control and it crashed into homes in the normally quiet city of Cerritos. The impact of the crash flattened four homes and engulfed eight more in flames that reached 100 feet into the air. A total of eleven homes were either destroyed or damaged and several others sustained minor damage. 82 people were killed in the crash; all 64 passengers and crew on board the Aeromexico plane, 3 occupants of the Piper Archer and 15 people on the ground.
